Microstructures with discontinuities
This research area focuses on the development and application of methods for describing and predicting heat transfer and mechanical properties of ceramic and other non-metallic materials with micro-cracks and porosity. This description shall form the basis for optimizing the micro structure with respect to its coupled properties. It is our aim to optimize applications like fibre composite ceramics, thermal insulation layers, or thermoelectric materials in arriving at a smallest possible heat transfer together with the best possible mechanical properties. This would mean combining optimum functionality combined with high durability.
